ìWhatís The Word?î
Motivation depends on beliefs. Research indicates that belief is an important variable in determining employee motivation to accomplish an objective. Perceiving an objective as do-able enhances the employeeís motivation to do it. “Whatís The Word?” is a thought provoking group exercise designed to show managers that a balance must be found in setting objectives that are challenging yet achievable. The game begins with participants being organized into three or more groups. Each group is given a list of 12 scrambled words and an objective to unscramble the words within a specific time limit. Unknown to the teams, there are three different lists of scrambled words — easy, challenging yet achievable, and impossible. Teams play two rounds, reporting their results to the group between rounds, and thus re-emphasizing that the objective is for each group to unscramble their list of words.
